How it plays

The day of a manager, in eight steps

There is no 40-page manual. There are eight things you do, in this order, and each is explained on the screen where it happens.

  1. The squad — attributes, potential, condition
The squad — attributes, potential, condition
    1

    Read your squad

Every player comes with a position, visible and hidden attributes, potential, age and an aging DNA. The stars next to positions say where he is actually worth something. The staff's read helps at first — then you learn to see it yourself.

  2. The lineup on the pitch
    The lineup on the pitch
    2

    Set the lineup

Eleven on the pitch, a bench, the penalty and corner takers. Drag on the pitch, or let the assistant suggest. No lineup set? The match goes out with the best available eleven — but it is the assistant's eleven, not yours.

  3. Tactics — shape, mentality, the levers
Tactics — shape, mentality, the levers
    3

    Tactics

Shape, mentality (five notches), pressing, tempo, width, defensive line, passing style, and personal orders. Every lever costs something — high pressing burns stamina, a fast tempo breeds mistakes. And from the bench, mid-match, you can change it.

  4. The match — the story, lineups, statistics
The match — the story, lineups, statistics
    4

    The live match

On matchday the engine plays it on the clock. You see the stream, the field, the public stats, and react from the bench: a sub, a mentality, a shout. You can follow several matches at once. At the end: ratings, mood, the gate.

  5. 5

    Training

Every player has a training focus. The young grow fast, the older slowly, and nobody passes their ceiling — and the closer they get, the harder every point comes. No artificial cap per season.

  6. The market — auctions with sealed rivals
The market — auctions with sealed rivals
    6

    The market

Auctions (rivals' bids are sealed), free-agent talks (24 hours, and the agent decides), loans, and contract renewals with clauses. Agents talk; the maths decides.

  7. Money — income, outgo, wages
    Money — income, outgo, wages
    7

    Money

Wages every week, a gate every home match, sponsors with performance clauses, a league grant, ground upkeep. The rule: wage-to-income under 0.85. Cross it — the world reacts, not the system.

  8. The ground — expansions, tickets, the away end
The ground — expansions, tickets, the away end
    8

    The ground and the fans

Ticket price, expansions (any number of seats, the price follows), the away end, a naming sponsor. The fans' mood builds from form, expectations, the cup — and moves the crowd at the gate.

Your first hour

Six actions and you are ready for Round 1.

  1. Register at play.total.football.
  2. Name your club and pick its colours; it enters the highest league with a free slot.
  3. The draft: 18 rounds, one of three, from a personal pool of 54 players.
  4. Read your squad, set a lineup and tactics.
  5. Challenge a club to a friendly (a bot accepts at once) and watch the live engine yourself.
  6. Sign a sponsor, set training focuses, and introduce yourself on the forum.

What needs attention, and when

Ten minutes a day are enough. This is what those ten minutes hold.

WhatWhenWhy it matters
Lineup & tacticsBefore every matchInjuries, fatigue and bans change your best eleven
TrainingOnce a weekThe focus decides who grows; the staff does the rest
The marketWhen the squad has a holeAuctions close on time; free-agent talks last 24 hours
Messages & pressWhen it arrivesAn agent waiting, a journalist's question — silence has a price
MoneyOnce a weekWage-to-income, sponsors ending, an expansion finished
